SPARTA, Wis. (WKBT) - Smoke detectors are credited with saving lives during a fire in Sparta early Wednesday morning.
Monroe County Officials responded to a call on the 500 block of N. Benton St. reporting a fire in the living room.
Officers located family members outside the smoke-filled house yelling for a child they could not find.
The child that was initially thought to be missing had escaped through a second story window and climbed to the ground. She then ran to the neighbor’s house for help.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a battery that exploded and caught fire after overcharging in a laptop computer.
The homeowner said he heard the popping sound, and then minutes later a smoke detector going off. He attempted to extinguish the fire while other adults worked to evacuate the children.
One adult was treated for smoke inhalation by EMS on scene.
